Mavericks Sign McGee to Replace Injured Powell

Defense and Rebounding Struggle Prompt Move

McGee Steps into Starting Role

The Dallas Mavericks have signed free agent center Javale McGee to a one-year deal, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. McGee is expected to replace Dwight Powell, who is out indefinitely with a torn Achilles tendon.

Powell, who was acquired by the Mavericks in a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers last season, was a key part of Dallas' defense. He was particularly effective in protecting the rim and defending in the post. However, he struggled with rebounding and was often seen as a liability on the offensive end.

McGee, a three-time NBA champion, is a veteran of 13 seasons. He is known for his athleticism, shot-blocking ability, and rebounding prowess. He is also a capable offensive player, averaging 7.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last season with the Phoenix Suns.

The Mavericks are hoping that McGee can provide them with the rim protection and rebounding they need to compete for a playoff spot. He is expected to start alongside Luka Dončić, Spencer Dinwiddie, Reggie Bullock, and Dorian Finney-Smith.
