Dramatic Puyol header sinks Germany
Spain reached the World Cup final for the first time after a second-half header from Carles Puyol secured a narrow victory over Germany in Durban on Wednesday.
The European champions will now face the Netherlands in Sunday’s final in Johannesburg after Puyol’s 73rd-minute goal proved enough to see off a spirited German side.
Spain had the better of the first half but Germany improved after the break and looked the more likely winners before Puyol struck.
The defender rose highest to head home Xavi’s corner and spark wild celebrations among the Spanish players and fans.
Germany pushed for an equaliser but Spain held on to book their place in the final.
