The Perfect Couple Review – Nicole Kidman's Gorgeous Murder Mystery Is Ludicrously Good
Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem star in this stylish neo-noir that's as visually stunning as it is narratively bonkers.
The Perfect Couple is a sumptuous visual feast, with director Pawel Pawlikowski (Ida) creating a world of saturated colors, Art Deco glamour, and lush cinematography. The film is a feast for the eyes, with every frame a work of art.
But beneath its beautiful surface, The Perfect Couple is a deeply flawed film. The plot is convoluted and nonsensical, the characters are unlikable, and the tone is all over the place. It's a film that's trying to be too many things at once, and it ultimately fails to deliver on any of them.
Kidman and Bardem are both excellent in the lead roles, but they can't save the film from its own narrative shortcomings.
Kidman plays Maria, a wealthy widow who falls for a mysterious stranger named Victor (Bardem). Victor is a charming and enigmatic figure, but he soon reveals himself to be a dangerous and manipulative man.
Kidman is excellent as Maria, bringing a sense of vulnerability and strength to the role. Bardem is equally good as Victor, creating a character who is both charismatic and terrifying.
The supporting cast is also strong, with Danny Huston and Ruth Wilson both giving standout performances.
Huston plays Maria's brother, who is suspicious of Victor from the start. Wilson plays Victor's ex-wife, who is also seeking revenge against him.
The supporting cast helps to flesh out the world of The Perfect Couple, but they can't disguise the film's fundamental flaws.
